Cardiff Select and Swansea Select will battle it out at the Ice Arena Wales on March 15th, with the face-off at 7:30 p.m., as both sides look to be crowned champions. The first ever match between the two sides took place last year, as Cardiff came out victorious in a 6-5 thriller that needed overtime to find a winner.

Captain of the Cardiff Select, Gediminias Jadkauskas, says he’s looking forward to this years’ match, after being influential in his sides’ 6-5 victory last year. He said: “Last year was amazing! Everyone that turned up had fun. We could hear them from the benches and they inspired us to get the victory.

“If you want to be on the edge of your seat and see some high-level division one Ice Hockey then you should come.”

Last year was the first ever Cardiff-Swansea Ice Hockey Varsity, seeing about 500 fans in attendance. Cardiff Redhawks treasurer Rachel Alexander said: “Last year was the first year we trialled the concept of Cardiff and Swansea teams, so we were a little worried about how it was going to work out.

“In the end we had over 500 fans join us to watch Cardiff win 6-5 in a nail-biting overtime victory.”

The Cardiff Redhawks are an Ice Hockey team that competes in the BUIHA Division One South League, that sees their players split up into Cardiff Select and Swansea Select once a year to compete in the Varsity match.

Rachel said: “We’ve been playing competitively for almost 15 years in the British Universities Ice Hockey Association Cup competition against other universities in the UK.

“The varsity squad is primarily made up of A team players with some B players, divided up by hometown and university.”

Tickets are now on sale on the Cardiff Devils webpage (Click on tickets followed by book tickets). Tickets are £8 per person or £12 including transportation from either the Atrium (USW) or Cardiff Students’ Union (Cardiff Uni).
